Police Impersonation Fraud - Trigger Fraud Alert #47 (October 2026) |
||
Dear Resident,
Police Impersonation Fraud – Please pass onto Friends, Neighbours and Family.
A Fraud Alert has been issued after fraudsters have called members of the public posing as police officers and claiming to be calling from 101. Fraudsters are using “spoofing software” to intentionally disguise their real caller ID and make it appear that they are calling from a phone number used by a trusted organisation, such as the police, a bank or a government agency. These fraudulent calls may be automated or may involve a real person, but both are fake. A police officer will never call you out of the blue asking for personal information, bank account details or cryptocurrency credentials. A police officer will never ask you to withdraw money, transfer money to a “safe account” or purchase high-value items as part of an investigation.
Hang up. If a call feels strange or the caller is asking you to act immediately, end the call. Wait 10 minutes. Fraudsters can sometimes keep your phone line open. Wait before making another call, or use a different phone, to make sure the line has completely cleared. Call back through official channels. Dial 101 manually to check the caller’s identity. Do not call back using the number shown in your call history. Remember: Don’t trust the number that appears on your phone’s caller ID display. You could be speaking to a fraudster using spoofing software.
BBC Morning Live has also covered this type of fraud, highlighting how fraudsters are faking official telephone numbers, including the number of a Police and Crime Commissioner, to steal thousands of pounds. Watch the BBC Morning Live coverage:
